Who Invented The Typewriter?
The invention of typewriter has been very gradual and a comprehensive model was created after more than 50 innovations.
In a 1714 a patent was obtained from Britain by Hendry Mill for a machine which looked like a typewriter, ownership of the machine was not confirmed though. In 1808 Pellegrino Turri of Italy who invented the typewriter machine which was near perfect and usable and needed carbon paper to function.
William Austin Burt developed a machine called Typewriter in 1829 and was recorded among the first typewriters. It was also the first machine to be documented by Science Museum, London. This claim can be disputed as the world knows that Turri’s machine was discovered earlier. But Burt could not find buyers for his machines when it was commercially produced. Handwriting was speedier than this machine. This machine instead of keyboard used a dial to select the keys. Thus it was branded as index typewriter.
Revolutionary expansion in the field of business warranted the requirement for speedy documentation. Hand writing the documents was slow and only 30 words per minute could be clocked, where as a typist or telegrapher was able to document information at the speed of 100 to 130 words per minute. Keeping up with the demand many typewriting machines were invented and commercially produced in America and Europe during 1829-1870.
Many inventions were made in this period. Among them the Chirographer invented by Charles Thurber in 1845, a machine called “Scribe harpsichord” invented by Giuseppe Ravizza of Italy in 1855. Giuseppe’s machine allowed you to see the result while typing. A Brazilian priest using wood and knives made a typewriter in 1861, which brought him a gold medal from the then ruling Emperor. The Brazilians proclaimed him as the one to invent the typewriter. John Pratt, an American created Pterotype 1865. Peter Mitterhofer, an Austrian after dallying with many models came up in 1867 with comprehensively usable typewriter.
The Hansen Writing Ball was invented 1865 by a Danish national named Rasmus Mailing Hansen. This machine was produced commercially in 1870 and marketed as a typewriter.
Many time one question in mind that Who Invented The QWERTY Keyboard? C. Latham Sholes, Samuel W. Soule and Carlos Glidden invented the most successful commercial typewriter in 1867. Densmore and Yost bought this patent and commercially produced and marketed as “Sholes and Glidden Type-writer. The word “typewriter” has thus originated.
